Cause: SSL Connect Error

Edited

Overview

An “SSL connect error” typically occurs when a domain is not pointing to the correct server IP where the SSL certificate is installed. This usually happens when DNS A-records do not match the IP address of our servers.

Note: This is not a BionicWP hosting issue.

Common Causes

  • Domain A-record points to a different IP than our servers.

  • Site is still resolving to a previous hosting provider

  • Multiple A-records causing conflicts

  • DNS changes made but not fully propagated

  • Incorrect DNS configuration for the domain or subdomain

How to Resolve

Verify A-Records

  • Check the domain’s A-record and confirm it matches the server IP shown in the platform

  • Remove any A-records pointing to old or incorrect IP addresses

  • Keep only the A-record(s) that resolve to the correct server

Confirm DNS Resolution

  • Ensure the domain resolves to the correct IP from multiple locations

  • Verify both www and non-www versions point to the same destination

Allow DNS Propagation

  • DNS updates may take 15 minutes to several hours, depending on TTL

  • SSL will not connect successfully until DNS propagation completes

When to Contact Support

Contact support if:

  • DNS records match the platform IP but the SSL error persists

  • You need help verifying which IP the domain should point to

  • The site remains inaccessible after DNS corrections

Provide the domain name so the team can confirm DNS resolution and SSL status.
