DNS records got dropped (likely after domain renewal)

Edited

Overview

In some cases, DNS records may disappear or reset after a domain renewal. This can lead to website downtime or incorrect DNS responses.

Note: This isn't a BionicWP hosting issue.

Why This Happens

  • Registrar resets DNS zone after renewal

  • Nameserver changes applied automatically

  • Domain expired and went into a grace/hold period

  • DNS hosting was not renewed or expired with the domain

  • Some providers purge DNS entries after expiration

Signs of Dropped DNS Records

  • Website not loading

  • DNS lookups returning no records

  • “DNS not found” or NXDOMAIN errors

How to Resolve

  1. Verify Current DNS Zone

  2.  Check if A, MX, CNAME, and TXT records still exist.

  3. Re-add Missing Records

  4.  Restore the A-record, email records, and any custom entries.

  5. Confirm Nameservers

  6.  Ensure your domain is still using the correct NS. Some providers revert to the default NS after renewal.

  7.  After restoring records, allow 15 minutes to several hours to propagate, depending on TTL.

When to Contact Support

If you cannot locate old DNS settings, contact support with your domain name—the team can help reconstruct the required DNS records.
