How to Update Your DNS on GoDaddy

Edited

Overview

Managing DNS records is essential for directing your domain's traffic to the correct servers. GoDaddy provides a user-friendly interface to add, modify, or delete DNS records, ensuring your domain resolves correctly and efficiently.

How It Works

When you update DNS records on GoDaddy, you're instructing the Domain Name System on how to route traffic for your domain. This includes specifying IP addresses for your website, setting up email routing, and more. Changes made in GoDaddy's dashboard typically propagate quickly, but full DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Log into the GoDaddy Dashboard

2. Access Your Domain's DNS Settings

  • Click on My Products.

  • Under the "Domains" section, locate the domain you wish to manage and click on DNS.

3. Update DNS Records

  • In the DNS Management page, you'll see a list of your current DNS records.

  • To edit an existing record:

    • Click the Edit button next to the record you want to change.

    • Modify the necessary fields (e.g., Name, Value, TTL).

    • Click Save to apply the changes.

  • To add a new record:

    • Click on Add.

    • Select the record type (e.g., A, CNAME, MX, TXT).

    • Fill in the required information.

    • Click Save to add the new record.

4. Wait for DNS Propagation

After making changes, DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours to fully update across the internet. However, changes often take effect much sooner.

Pro Tip: Before making DNS changes, it's advisable to lower the TTL (Time to Live) value of your records to a shorter duration (e.g., 600 seconds) to allow for quicker propagation. After the changes have propagated, you can increase the TTL value again.
